But a similar case has come to light from Chennai. A person from Chennai filed a case at the post office for a 50 paise coin. You will be surprised to know that he won this case and the court has imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the post office.
Know what is the whole matter
According to Times of India, this matter happened last December. Manasa, a resident of Garugambakkam, Chennai, had gone to Polichalur post office to post his letter. Here he paid Rs 30 at the counter and the postage charge on the letter was Rs 29.50. He expected that the clerk would return him 50 paise, but it did not happen.
When he asked for the money, the clerk said that the system itself rounds off the amount to Rs 30. After this Mansa asked to make UPI payment, on which the post office employee refused to take the money through UPI citing technical reasons. On which Mansa decided to fight for 50 paise. He complained about this in the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Mansa said in the court that the transactions in the post office The practice of rounding off can lead to embezzlement of money. This may cause loss to the government. Amounts less than 50 paise cannot be ignored. The post office said in its clarification that there was a problem in digital payments since November 2023. It was closed in May 2024.
After hearing both the sides, the court said that due to a problem in the software, the post office has admitted to taking more money. This is an unfair trade practice under Section 2(47) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. For this reason, instead of 50 paise, the post office will have to pay 15 thousand rupees to the victim.
