In India, women celebrate this festival with great pomp and show; this festival helps in increasing the love between husband and wife. Let us look at the classical form of this festival.
Classical form of observing Karva Chauth fast
According to Narada Purana Purvabhag IV Pada Chapter number 113, Kartik Krishna Chaturthi has been described as the fast of ‘Karkachaturthi’ (Karva Chauth). This Satvik fast is only for women. That’s why its rule is stated –
- Women should take bath and wear clothes and jewelery and worship Lord Ganesha. Place ten karvas filled with dishes in front of them and offer them to Lord Ganesha with a pure heart of devotion.
- At the time of dedication, one should say that ‘May Lord Kapardi Ganesha be pleased with me.
- After this, distribute those taxes respectfully among the beautiful women and Vedapathi Brahmins as per their wish.
- After this, when the moon rises at night, offer Arghya to the moon in a ritual manner.
- To fulfill the fast, eat sweets yourself.
- Women should observe this fast for sixteen or twelve years and perform its Udhyaya. After that, she should leave it or the woman should keep observing this fast throughout her life with the wish of good luck, because there is no other fast in the three worlds as auspicious as this fast for women.
Draupadi also kept the fast of Karva Chauth
Karva Chauth is also mentioned in Vratutsva Chandrika 8.1, in which page number 234 (Bharat Dharma Press) says that once Arjun had gone to Kilgiri, at that time Draupadi thought in her mind that many types of obstacles are present here. Yes and Arjun is not there, so what should I do now? Thinking this, Draupadi thought of Lord Krishna. When God arrived, Draupadi folded her hands and prayed, “Lord! If there is any easy solution to peace, please tell me.”
Hearing this, Lord Krishna said, “Parvati had asked a similar question to Mahadevji, answering which Mahadevji told about the fast of Karva Chaturthi (Karva Chauth), the destroyer of all obstacles.” The residence of the learned Brahmin and the origin of the Veda Vedanga. In the sound-filled Indraprastha city, there lived a Brahmin named Vidwachchiromani Ved Sharma. He had seven sons from his wife named Lilavati and a daughter named Veeravati, an auspicious person with all the qualities. When he got time, he got Veeravati married to a Brahmin who knew the Vedas and Vedas.
One day, this girl observed Karva Chauth fast as per the rituals, but as the evening approached, she was tormented by hunger, due to which Veeravati became sad. Seeing his sister very sad, her brother went to a very high peak and lit a meteor. Veeravati ended the fast after knowing the moonrise and offering ardhya. The result was that the woman’s husband died immediately.
On the death of her husband, Veeravati felt great sorrow and observed a fast for a year. When the time of Karva Chaturthi came, Indrani came from heaven and along with her other heavenly goddesses also arrived on the earth. Having such a beautiful time, Veeravati asked the reason for her Kant’s sudden death. Indrani said, “Breaking the fast by not offering Ardhya to the moon of Karva Chauth is the reason for your husband’s death. If you still observe Karak-Vrat as per the rituals, your husband can get rebirth.”
Veeravati observed the fast ritually and Indrani worshiped her dead husband with water, due to which he came back to life. Veeravati got the good fortune of husband in a long time. For this reason Shri Krishna told Draupadi that “If you also do this Karva Chaturthi, then all the vices will be destroyed.”
Sutji said that when Draupadi observed this fast, the army of Kuru (Duryodhan etc.) was defeated and the Pandavas were victorious. For this reason, women who want good luck and increase in wealth must observe this fast.
Education – General promotion of this fast is found in almost all countries, but especially in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, etc. and Rajputana. Just as other fasts have undergone changes, similarly this fast too has definitely got some imaginary element. The reason is that it is not done according to the classical method but according to tradition and the fictional story has also been included in place of the original story.
Only women have the right to fast on Karva Chauth. Women have a special place in our Sanatan Dharma. It is said in Manu Smriti (3.56) –
Yatra Naryastu Pujyante Ramante Tatra Devataah. Yatraitaastu na pujyante sarvastatraphalah kriyah.
In other words: – Gods reside in those places where women are worshiped and where they are not worshipped, all the good deeds also go waste, hence always keep in mind that women power is not being insulted.
