MP Paddy Crop: Due to lack of timely monsoon rains, the area under paddy sown in the current kharif season has come down by 5.99 per cent to 367.55 lakh hectares in many states. In the data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday, there has been mention of a big decline in the area under paddy sown. Paddy was sown in 390.99 lakh hectare in the same period a year ago. Paddy is the main crop of Kharif season. Its sowing starts in June with the arrival of south-west monsoon and the harvesting of this crop starts from October.
According to the ministry’s data, till August 26, the area under paddy in Jharkhand has decreased by 10.51 lakh hectares in this kharif season. Similarly, in West Bengal 4.62 lakh hectares, Chhattisgarh 3.45 lakh hectares, Uttar Pradesh 2.63 lakh hectares, Bihar 2.40 lakh hectares and Odisha 2.24 lakh hectares area under paddy has been sown. Apart from these, the area under paddy also decreased in Assam (0.49 lakh hectare), Madhya Pradesh (0.46 lakh hectare), Haryana (0.44 lakh hectare), Tripura (0.22 lakh hectare), Nagaland (0.21 lakh hectare), Meghalaya (0.18 lakh hectare). Area of pulses crops also decreased
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, till August 24, the southwest monsoon rains in the country have been nine percent more than normal. Rainfall has decreased by 19 percent in the country’s eastern and north-eastern India during this period, due to which the area under paddy has been affected. Apart from paddy, the total area under pulses has also declined by 4.95 per cent to 127.71 lakh hectare in Kharif season till August 26. The area under pulses was 134.37 lakh hectare in the same period a year ago.
Slight increase in area under sugarcane
The area under tur is 44.07 lakh hectare as against 44.07 lakh hectare in the same period a year ago. The area under urad is 36.15 lakh hectare in the same period as against 37.91 lakh hectare a year ago. In the case of sowing of oilseed crops also, the situation seems to be lagging behind. The area under oilseeds was 186.48 lakh hectare in the current kharif season till August 26, as against 188.62 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. However, in the case of coarse cereals, sowing has been done in 176.33 lakh hectares, a little more than 169.39 lakh hectares a year ago. In the case of cash crops, the area under cotton stood at 124.55 lakh hectare and the area under sugarcane is slightly more than 55.59 lakh hectare with slight increase. These figures show that till August 26, the area under jute remained stagnant at 6.94 lakh hectares.
