The festival of Chaitra Navratri is being celebrated from April 9 to April 17 this year and a different incarnation of Maa Durga is worshiped on each day of the nine-day festival. The sixth day of the auspicious festival is dedicated to Goddess Katyayani, who is considered to be the fierce form of Maa Durga. Mother Katyayani, also known as Mahishasurmardini, is depicted with four, ten or eighteen hands. According to the Skanda Purana, she was born out of the spontaneous anger of the gods and killed the demon Mahishasura riding on a lion.

According to Vamana Purana, she was created from the combined energy of the gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva when their anger over the demon Mahishasura was manifested in the form of energy rays.
