West Bengal DVC water release: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded to write to the Prime Minister within three days regarding the flood situation in the state. In this letter, he has alleged that Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) released water unilaterally from its dams without consulting the state government, due to which many districts have been flooded.
Meanwhile, IAS Shantanu Basu, Power Secretary in the West Bengal Government, resigned from the board of DVC. Chief Engineer Irrigation and Waterways of the West Bengal Government has also resigned from the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee (DVRRC).
Was DVC aware of the release of water?
Mamata Banerjee claimed that the release of water by DVC without consultation has led to the terrible flood situation in the districts of South Bengal, causing widespread devastation. In response to the first letter written by CM Mamata to the Prime Minister on Friday, September 20, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil had said that the state officials were informed at every level about the release of water from DVC dams. Patil also said that this step was necessary to prevent a major disaster.
50 lakh people affected by flood
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said in her letter that 50 lakh people in the state have been affected by the floods and she has urged to immediately release central funds to deal with this severe devastation. Apart from this, Mamata expressed displeasure over the unilateral action of DVC and warned that if such attitude continues, the West Bengal government will consider breaking all the agreements made with DVC. In this letter, Mamata has appealed to the central government to take immediate steps to help the state and bring the situation under control.
