16 December Weather Update: The cold is increasing with each passing day. Northern states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi remained in the grip of cold wave on Monday. While the temperature was recorded below zero in Jammu and Kashmir, the mercury dropped below 10 degrees Celsius in some parts of the eastern state of Odisha. Severe cold wave continued in Kashmir and the minimum temperature remained several degrees below zero.
The coldest place in the valley was Konibal, located on the outskirts of Pampore town, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 6 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Pahalgam, the base camp of the annual Amarnath Yatra, was recorded at minus 5 degrees Celsius, while it was minus 3.4 degrees Celsius in Srinagar city and minus 4 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg. The Meteorological Department has predicted mainly dry weather in the Union Territory till December 26 and light snowfall in the higher reaches of the valley on the night of December 21-22.
Punjab and Haryana in the grip of cold
Punjab and Haryana are also in the grip of severe cold. The minimum temperature was recorded at 0.6 degrees Celsius in Faridkot and Hisar. The temperature in Chandigarh, the common capital of Punjab and Haryana states, was recorded at 26.1 degrees Celsius on Monday, which is three degrees more than the normal limit. Ludhiana and Patiala were also in the grip of severe cold and the minimum temperatures there were recorded at 3.6 degrees and 5.3 degrees Celsius respectively. Gurdaspur and Bathinda also had a cold night and the temperatures there were recorded at 3 degrees and 3.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

The minimum temperature in Gurugram, Haryana was recorded at 5.3 degrees while the minimum temperature in Rohtak was recorded at 4.2 degrees Celsius. Cold wave conditions were also witnessed in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh as the weather department issued an ‘orange’ alert of severe cold at isolated places in the lower hills and plains of Una, Bilaspur and Hamirpur. Tabo in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti was the coldest at night, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 10.6 degrees Celsius. State capital Shimla was the hottest night for the second consecutive night, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 10.9 degrees Celsius, which was 5.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
Mercury reaches 1.5 in Churu, Rajasthan
The maximum temperature in the ‘Queen of Hills’ was 21 degrees Celsius, which is the second highest temperature for the month of December after 2017 when the maximum temperature was 21.3 degrees Celsius. Kufri and Narkanda recorded minimum temperatures of 10.5 degrees Celsius and 8.3 degrees Celsius respectively, while Una recorded minus 0.7 degrees Celsius. Many parts of Rajasthan are experiencing severe cold, where Fatehpur in Sikar district recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Churu was recorded at 1.5 degrees, while it was 2.2 degrees in Alwar, 2.5 degrees in Sikar, 2.7 degrees in Sangaria and Pilani, 3.7 degrees in Bhilwara and Chittorgarh, 4.9 degrees in Sirohi and 5.0 degrees in Ganganagar.

The department has predicted that there will be no respite from the severe cold during the next 24 hours. The eastern state of Odisha witnessed severe cold with 15 places recording temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, with Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district being the coldest in the state at one degree Celsius. Steel city Rourkela in the plains recorded a minimum temperature of 5.7 degrees Celsius. Meteorological Department sources said that a thin layer of snow has been reported at various places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundergarh districts.
