Sonam Wangchuk On Hunger Strike: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been on fast for the last 14 days in Delhi demanding various demands including inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He said that a country does not become democratic by elections alone but this can happen only when the voice of the people is heard.

Sonam Wangchuk, who led the march from Leh to Delhi, was detained along with several of her supporters last month and later released. Since then, he is on an indefinite fast at Ladakh Bhawan along with about two dozen of his supporters demanding a meeting with the top leadership of the country. No information has been given by the government about any meeting till now.

Sonam Wangchuk is on fast since October 6

Sonam Wangchuk, who has been fasting since October 6 by drinking only salt water solution, regretted that her supporters are being prevented from meeting the top leadership by erecting barriers around the building. Wangchuk, who was physically weak after fasting for several days, spoke in a low voice and said in his interview, “You can see that there are restrictions in Ladakh Bhawan. They are deciding who can come in and who can’t. They are not even allowing people to gather here in the park.”

Sonam Wangchuk said that perhaps the top leadership is somewhat afraid of the support she is getting. They are afraid of those who want to fast silently. Wangchuk said that whatever happened to him after coming to Delhi cannot be called democratic. He said that this is sad for democracy. From one end of the country, 150 people from border areas came to the national capital, including people above 80, women and retired soldiers guarding India’s borders. After coming to Delhi, he was detained and then forced to sit on a fast. Despite all this, the government is not even ready to listen.

How to call this democracy – Sonam Wangchuk

Wangchuk said that he does not understand how to call this democracy. Elections alone do not make a country democratic. The government will have to respect the people and their voice. He said that he is sad for the world’s largest democracy.

The government should not be so cruel

He said, “In a democracy, the government should not be so cruel, especially when it comes to people coming from the border areas. We have protected our borders in 5-6 wars for years. “This kind of behavior can affect people’s morale and patriotism.”

Sonam Wangchuk is urging to start talks again

“Nobody has contacted us yet,” Wangchuk said. We will remain sitting here. We are in no hurry. If the protest continues, the government may listen to us. We are not asking that they give us the final verdict today, we are just requesting them to resume talks.
