Pakistan elections (symbolic)
Islamabad: National Assembly elections are being held again in Pakistan today. This includes 21 seats, where by-elections are being conducted amid tight security. Voting started on Sunday for by-elections on 21 seats of Pakistan’s National Assembly and Provincial Assembly. During this period, mobile and internet services are suspended in selected districts of Punjab and Balochistan province. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, voting started at 8 am and continued till 5 pm. After the end of the official voting time period, only those voters who are present at the center at the end of the time are being allowed to cast their votes.
Elections for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies were held in Pakistan on February 8. However, voting was canceled for one seat of the National Assembly, two seats of the Punjab Assembly and one seat of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Apart from these, candidates who won more than one seat chose only one seat after the elections, due to which the Election Commission of Pakistan has to hold by-elections on 21 seats. These include five seats in the National Assembly and 16 seats in the Provincial Assembly. A day earlier, on the request of the Election Commission of Pakistan, the government had announced temporary suspension of mobile phone services in select districts of Punjab and Balochistan province during the by-elections.
