Chief Justice of the country Justice Sanjiv Khanna is the patron head of NALSA and Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai of the Supreme Court is its working president. Lok Adalats were held up to the level of Taluka (Tehsil), District and High Court in 36 states and union territories. Due to Bar Association elections in Rajasthan, it will be organized on 21st and 22nd December.

In the press release issued by NALSA, it has been said that till 7 pm on Saturday, a total of 1,45,47,595 (one crore forty five lakh forty seven thousand five hundred ninety five) cases were successfully resolved. These include 1,21,78,509 (one crore twenty one lakh seventy eight thousand five hundred nine) pre litigation cases and 23,69,086 (twenty three lakh sixty nine thousand eighty six) pending cases.
The cases dealt with include compoundable offences, plea bargaining, revenue cases, bank recovery cases, motor accident claims, check bounce cases, labor disputes, matrimonial disputes (except divorce cases), land. These include acquisition matters, intellectual property rights (IPR) disputes, consumer matters, traffic challans and other civil matters.
Purpose of Lok Adalats
The total settlement amount in these cases was approximately Rs 7,462.54 crore (seven thousand four hundred sixty-two crore fifty-four lakh). NALSA has said that the number of cases disposed is likely to increase as reports from some state legal services authorities are yet to come.
The objective of Lok Adalats, established under the provisions of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987, is to provide justice to the citizens, especially the deprived and poor sections. The confidence of the general public in this process is increasing. NALSA has expressed hope that people’s participation in Lok Adalats, which provide simple solutions instead of complex and lengthy process of litigation, will increase further in future. This will also reduce the burden on the judicial structure.
