Bangladesh-Pakistan Relations: Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Professor Mohammad Yunus on Thursday (December 19) urged Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to resolve post-1971 issues to help Dhaka take forward its relations with Islamabad.
Yunus told Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, “Issues have been coming up again and again. Let us resolve those issues so that we can move forward.” Sharif said the 1974 trilateral agreement involving Bangladesh, Pakistan and India had resolved the matters, but if there were any other pending issues, he would be happy to consider them.
Yunus and Sharif met at D8 summit
“It would be good for future generations to sort things out once and for all,” Professor Yunus said. Chief Advisor and Prime Minister of Pakistan Sharif met on the sidelines of the D8 summit and agreed to strengthen relations between the two countries by increasing trade, commerce and exchange of sports and cultural delegations.
Both leaders also expressed their desire to increase cooperation in new areas such as sugar industry and dengue management. Pro. Yunus and Sharif discussed issues of mutual interest including the revival of SAARC – a key feature of the foreign policy announced by the Chief Advisor after assuming charge as the head of the interim government.
There was also talk about holding elections in Bangladesh
The 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner also talked about his government’s plan to carry out “necessary reforms” and hold general elections before mid-2026. He said he is leading a consensus-building commission to negotiate reforms. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for building strategic ties between Dhaka and Islamabad.
Shahbaz Sharif praised Yunus
“We are really keen to strengthen our relations with our brother Bangladesh,” Sharif said. He appreciated Professor Yunus for his initiative to revive SAARC and Bangladesh for working on the possibility of holding a summit of the regional body.
Mohammad Yunus said “I am a big fan of the idea of SAARC. I keep pushing on this issue. I want a summit of SAARC leaders, even if it is just for a photo session, because it would send a strong message. Will go.” Pakistan Prime Minister Sharif also invited Professor Yunus to visit his country at his convenience.
