Jammu Kashmir News: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said Jammu and Kashmir is a political issue and it has been “complicated” by abolishing the erstwhile state’s special status. Mehbooba also alleged that the BJP was using the delimitation process to give a religious color to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters after the party’s political affairs committee meeting, Mehbooba said the situation in the union territory is “getting worse or made worse” day by day and people have been affected since August 5, 2019. Many difficulties are being faced, when the Central Government had made Article 370 ineffective. The PDP chief said, “Attempts are being made to trample the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. The Delimitation Commission report is a part of that and there is nothing new in it. It is also an attempt to weaken the people.
Demand for talks with Pakistan to ‘resolve the issue’
The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister sought talks with Pakistan to ‘resolve the issue’, saying they would be termed as anti-national, ‘because whatever the BJP or its agenda and even (Nathuram) speaks against Godse, he is declared anti-India. “But I will still say that the issue of Jammu and Kashmir is a political issue and the abrogation of Article 370 has not solved it, but has become more complicated,” she said. The Indian government will have to talk to its neighboring country Pakistan today or tomorrow or some other day, so that the matter can be resolved and the bloodshed can be stopped.
However, Mehbooba alleged that “the more violence or bloodshed in Jammu and Kashmir, the more will BJP benefit”. And instead wants to talk about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Mehbooba said, “First, they should talk about day-to-day incursions into Ladakh by China.” ‘
Ladakh a part of Jammu and Kashmir- Mufti
“That too is part of Jammu and Kashmir and not of Pakistan. The ceasefire between India and Pakistan was effective after the talks. They are shying away from accepting that they are talking to Pakistan… After all their tallest leader (former Prime Minister Atal Bihari) Vajpayee went to Pakistan, (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi went to Pakistan, so we have to talk to him. There is no other option.”
When asked about the delimitation exercise, the PDP chief said, “They have tried to make the people of Jammu and Kashmir fight among themselves at the communal level, at the social level. Our struggle will be against it. Our political agenda is that J&K is a political issue, but they want to give it a religious look. We have repeatedly said that Jammu and Kashmir has been made a laboratory.
Taking a dig at the Delimitation Commission, Mehbooba alleged that it did not follow any procedure in determining the new constituencies. The former chief minister said, “He has delimited here, some areas have been joined with others without any numbers. Somewhere there is such a constituency, where there are one lakh votes, then there is such an area where there are 1.75 lakh voters. There is no way. Now they will repeat it all over the country.
BJP targeted
Mehbooba alleged, “Our country is not running according to the Constitution, but according to the agenda of the BJP. But we are going to fight it with all our might. We will oppose the cycle of destruction they have started in Jammu and Kashmir. We are not going to give them an easy way forward. Referring to the ongoing controversy over the hijab, Mehbooba said that it has been made a national issue as it is a symbol and identity of a particular community. “This issue (hijab) is being used for the Uttar Pradesh elections, but I am apprehensive that it is not going to stop at the hijab. They will attack our other symbols. It is not enough that we remain Indians, they want us to be BJP people.
Mehbooba alleged that efforts were being made to break the Gupkar alliance under which several mainstream political parties came together to demand restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state.
“We have formed the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and we will fight with all our might,” he said. We will fight together. Attempts are being made to break PAGD by blackmailing or luring some people, but the alliance is the last hope of the people and we will continue our struggle keeping it united.
