Maharashtra Election Results: The victory of the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra is being widely credited to the government’s welfare schemes but a significant factor has been the division of Muslim votes, which has given the ruling alliance a major share of the 38 seats in the state. The Muslim population in these 38 seats is more than 20 percent, which creates a significant difference in the election results.
Overall, the ruling alliance has won 22 of these 38 seats, much ahead of the 13 seats won by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi. Congress has suffered huge losses due to division of votes. The party’s score dropped from 11 to five. Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction has got six seats and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction has got two seats.
At the same time, out of 38 seats, BJP has increased its tally from 11 seats in 2019 to 14. Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has won six seats and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party has won two seats. Of the remaining three seats, Samajwadi Party got two and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM got only one seat.
Maulvis did not work in Maharashtra?
The results from Maharashtra indicate that the clerics failed to exert their influence on the collective decision of the Muslim community. Such a situation helped the BJP strengthen its allegations of “vote jihad” or consolidating Muslim votes against the Mahayuti.
Rejecting the opposition’s allegations of polarization, senior BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said that all communities are included in the slogan “Ek hain toh safe hain”. He said, “People did not fall prey to MVA’s politics of appeasement and polarization and came together to vote for development. Our mantra of ‘If we are together we are safe’ includes all communities.”
Nawab Malik and Zeeshan Siddiqui also lost the elections
Salim Sarang, president of the Muslim Welfare Association, said, “There was no room for appeasement, people here look at development and profit.” The big Muslim names who lost included NCP’s Nawab Malik and Zeeshan Siddiqui as well as Congress’s Arif Naseem Khan.
Data shows that support from the Muslim community increased in the elections held in May. Lok Sabha elections helped the MVA to a big victory in 2017, but the things that went against them in the assembly elections were low enthusiasm, divided votes and communal polarization in some seats. In some seats, the presence of multiple Muslim candidates divided the votes.
Muslim votes divided
For example, from Aurangabad East, AIMIM state chief and former MP Imtiaz Jaleel lost to BJP’s Atul Save by 2,161 votes. VBA’s Afsar Khan (6,507 votes) and SP’s Abdul Ghaffar Syed (5,943 votes) divided the Muslim votes in the seat, ensuring Jaleel’s defeat.
The only seat AIMIM won was in Muslim-dominated Malegaon Central, where its candidate Mufti Ismail won by only 162 votes. This is the smallest victory margin in the entire state. Meanwhile, in Bhiwandi West, BJP’s Mahesh Chougule defeated SP’s Riyaz Azmi by 31,293 votes as Muslims also divided their votes between AIMIM’s Waris Pathan (15,800 votes) and independent Vilas Patil (31,579 votes).
