Maharashtra: Woman killed in tiger attack, third incident in two days, 50 killed this year


Chandrapur Tiger Attack: An official of the Maharashtra Forest Department said that a 50-year-old woman was killed by a tiger in Chandrapur district on Thursday (December 15) afternoon. Chief Conservator of Forests Prakash Lonkar said that Swaroopa Teletiwar died when she was plowing cotton in a field near Khadi village in Saoli range, about 60 km from here.

Another forest department official said that a total of 50 people have died in tiger attacks in the district this year. He said that 44 attacks were done by tigers and six by leopards. On the other hand, on Wednesday (December 14) too, two separate incidents of tiger attack were known.

In Chandrapur district of eastern Maharashtra, different incidents keep happening regarding tiger attack. Recently two people died due to tiger attack. A senior forest officer of Chandrapur circle said that since the beginning of the year, 50 people have died in ‘man-animal conflict’ in the district. District Tadoba is the home of the Andhari Tiger. Baburao Kamble, a 65-year-old farmer in Rudrapur village of Saoli tehsil, was also attacked by the tiger when he was going to his field.

The tiger dragged him into the forest even after some local people made noise. Later the forest officials found his body. Chief Conservator of Forests, Chandrapur circle, Prakash Lonkar said that after the autopsy, Kamble’s family was given a compensation of Rs 25,000.

Attacked while grazing sheep

Devrao Sopankar (55), a resident of Kantapeth in Mool tehsil of Chandrapur district, was attacked by a tiger when he was grazing sheep in the forest near his village. When he did not return in the evening, his search was started and his mutilated body was found. Prakash Lonkar, Chief Conservator of Forests, Chandrapur Circle, said that the incident took place under the Chichpalli forest area.

Forest Minister told the officers

Maharashtra’s forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, who is the guardian minister of Chandrapur, on Thursday (December 15) asked the officers of his department to stop the tiger-human conflict in Chandrapur by taking appropriate steps. According to the District Information Office, two people were killed in separate tiger attacks in Mul and Saoli tehsils on December 14, while a woman died in Khedi on December 15. A press release quoted the minister as saying that action will be taken against the officials if they fail to stop the tiger-human conflict. He said that “troubling tigers” should be kept in cages to give relief to the people. So far 44 people have died in tiger attacks this year.
