Live: ‘Jal deluge’ in North India… Rise in Yamuna, danger mark touched, hilly drains become rivers

Weather LIVE Updates: Incessant heavy rains have caused havoc in many parts of North India. Till Monday (July 10), 37 people have died in rain-related incidents. Several teams of Army and NDRF have been deployed to speed up the relief and rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Chief Ministers of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand about the situation and assured them of all possible help and cooperation from the Central Government.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, it has been said that PM Modi reviewed the situation arising out of excessive rains in different parts of the country with senior ministers and officials. Significantly, 18 people died in Himachal Pradesh due to flash floods and landslides in the last two days. At the same time, nine people died in Punjab and Haryana, seven in Rajasthan and three in Uttar Pradesh. In North India, many rivers including the Yamuna in Delhi are in spate.

In many areas of North India, roads and residential areas have been submerged in knee-deep water. Vehicles were seen flowing in the flood at many places. Due to the record rains on Sunday, the municipal bodies also looked helpless in improving the situation. A total of 39 NDRF teams have been deployed to deal with heavy rains and floods in four states of North India. Officials said that 14 NDRF teams are working in Punjab, while a dozen teams are deployed in Himachal Pradesh, eight in Uttarakhand and five in Haryana.

An NDRF spokesperson said, “The rescue operation is being carried out as per the ground situation and in coordination with the state authorities.” The army rescued 910 students from a private university in the state after heavy rains left Punjab waterlogged. and saved 50 others. The civil administration in Punjab and Haryana had earlier sought the help of the Army for rescue operations and the Army has sent flood relief troops of the Western Command to assist the administration in the flood-affected areas of both the states.

Landslide in Himachal Pradesh claimed four more lives in Shimla. The Shimla-Kalka highway was blocked on Monday morning due to heavy rains in the hill state for the third consecutive day. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said, “At least 16 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state in the last two days. Efforts are on to rescue 400 tourists and local people stranded in Chandratal and between Pagal and Telgi drains in Lahaul and Spiti. A day after heavy rains triggered landslides, damaged houses and killed several people in the state, the Meteorological Department on Monday issued a ‘red alert’ for ‘extremely heavy rain’.
