Somaiya School Principal: The management of a prominent school in Mumbai on Tuesday announced that it has terminated the services of Principal Parveen Shaikh. Just a few days ago, he was asked to step down for liking social media posts on the Palestine issue and the Hamas-Israel conflict. Shaikh, principal of Somaiya School in Mumbai’s Vidyavihar area, termed her dismissal from the post as completely illegal, harsh and unfair and politically motivated.

The school management said that “his personal social media activities were not in line with the values cherished by the educational institution.” Sheikh’s aide had said on May 2 that the management had earlier asked him to resign, allegedly over his views on social media. The management had then said that it was investigating the matter.

In a statement shared on social media platform “After careful consideration, they have terminated his services.”

In the statement, the school management claimed that “While we strongly support the right to freedom of expression, we recognize that it is not absolute and must be exercised with responsibility and respect for others.”

Early last week, the Somaiya School management informed the media that it had sought a written explanation from Shaikh and was awaiting his response. It was not made clear in the statement whether the management had received any clarification from him or not. Sheikh claimed in a statement shared on WhatsApp that “her dismissal was completely illegal and she was shocked to hear the news of her dismissal from social media even before receiving notice from the management.”

He claimed that “My work as a school principal has been exceptional and therefore my dismissal is wrong and unjust.” Shaikh further said that he is disappointed because the school management did not support him and took harsh and unfair action. This action appears to be politically motivated, she said, adding that she has strong faith in our legal system and the Indian Constitution and is currently considering her legal options. Shaikh had been associated with the school for the last 12 years and had taken over as principal seven years ago.
