LCA MK-2 fighter jet project gets government nod, likely to take first flight in 2024

LCA Mark-2 Fighter Aircraft: The Cabinet Committee on Defense Affairs of the Central Government has approved the development of the LCA MK-2, an upgraded version of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, as part of the promotion of indigenous fighter aircraft development initiatives. The government has sanctioned around Rs 10,000 crore for the project and the LCA Mk-2 is likely to take its first flight in 2024. It will be available for operation by 2028. The aircraft will be a medium weight variant of the original Tejas. It will be manufactured by the Aeronautical Development Agency.

Tejas is a single engine fighter aircraft
Tejas is a single-engine and highly maneuverable multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft manufactured by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Last year, HAL Chairman and Managing Director R Madhavan had said that the upgraded version of the jet would have a larger fuselage, longer range, better maintainability, greater load carrying capacity, stronger engine power and better net-centric warfare system. After its arrival, Mirage-2000, Jaguar and MiG-29 can be removed.

Jet’s first high-speed trials to begin in 2023
He also said that the first high-speed trials of the jet will begin in 2023 and production is expected to start around 2025. Tejas is a powerful platform for air combat and offensive air support, with reconnaissance and anti-ship operations as its secondary roles. The Tejas project will be followed by another mega project for the fifth generation medium weight deep penetration fighter with an estimated cost of around US$ 5 billion. The new fighter jet is expected to meet the future requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Air Force has already inducted the old variant of the LCA and 83 Mk-1A variants have also been ordered.

Let us tell you that an official said that the Mk-2 fighter aircraft will be the most advanced LCA variant which will be designed and developed indigenously by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). Another official said that it will be equipped with a more powerful engine (GE- 414), will be equipped with an improved radar, better avionics and electronics, and will be able to carry a higher weapon payload.
