It is said that Barbarik had sought permission from his mother to take part in the Mahabharata war. But the mother felt that it would be difficult for the Pandavas to win the war since the Kauravas had more forces. Therefore, he took a promise from Barbarik that if he supported the same side in the war, he would be losing.
