Delhi News: The government is going to take a big decision with the aim of facilitating the public in Delhi and encouraging them to pay traffic fines. To reduce the workload on the courts and the transport department, the Delhi government has announced a 50 percent discount on the challan amount. These challans include traffic offenses under specific sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
A proposal in this regard has been sent to Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena for his approval. It will be necessary to settle the challan within 90 days of the notification for existing challans and within 30 days for new challans issued later.
The notice applies to various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 – 177, 178(1) or (2), 178(3)(A), 178(3)(B), 179(1) or (2), 180, 181, 182(1), 182(2), 182A(1), 182A(3), 182A(4), 182B, 183(i), 183(ii), 184, 186, 189, 190(2), 192(1), 192A, 194(1), 194(2), 194A, 194B (1)&(2), 194C, 194D, 194E, 194F (a) & (b), 196 and 198 and the rules made thereunder. will be applicable. The purpose of this compounding is to encourage people to pay their traffic fines immediately in a convenient manner, thereby avoiding long-drawn-out legal disputes.
Further, the Delhi Government has authorised Head Constables and above rank officers of the Delhi Traffic Police and Transport Department as well as Assistant Traffic Inspectors (ATIs) of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to crack down on traffic offences under some of the above sections.
In order to facilitate the people of Delhi and to encourage settlement of traffic fines, the Delhi Government has decided to reduce the challan amount by 50% under specific sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

In a statement, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot said, “By giving 50 percent discount in the fine amount, we are encouraging Delhiites to settle their challans. Also, in view of road safety, by authorizing DTC ATI for challans, we are ensuring the safety of all road users and lane rule compliance.
