Kashmir in the grip of severe cold wave, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season, mercury below 4 degrees.


Jammu and Kashmir Weather: While Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season on Thursday, the entire Kashmir valley is in the grip of severe cold wave. The region is set to welcome the harshest 40-day cold known as “Chil-e-Kalan” from December 21. The minimum temperature in the entire region has dropped several degrees below the freezing point.

A thin layer of fog was seen in many parts of Srinagar city, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 6 degrees Celsius, down from minus 4.5 degrees Celsius the previous night, officials said. Wednesday night was the coldest night of the season so far in the city and the night temperature was 4 degrees below normal for this part of the season.

The weather department in Srinagar said the banks of several water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake, have frozen due to the extreme cold, while water supply lines in many areas of the city and other parts of the valley have also frozen due to the extreme cold. .

There has been an increase in diseases like cough and common cold due to prolonged drought in the city and other areas of the plains. Tourist spot Pahalgam in south Kashmir, one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, one degree lower than the previous night.

The minimum temperature in the famous ski resort Gulmarg was recorded at minus 5 degrees Celsius. Konibal valley on the outskirts of Pampore city was the coldest weather centre, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 8.4 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was recorded at minus 7 degrees Celsius in Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, minus 6.2 degrees in Kupwara in North Kashmir and minus 5.3 degrees in Kokernag in South Kashmir.

The Meteorological Department has predicted mainly dry weather till December 26, while there is a possibility of light snowfall in the higher reaches of the valley on the night of December 21-22. The Meteorological Department said that light snowfall is also possible in some higher areas from the night of December 27 to the morning of December 28. However, the minimum temperature is expected to drop further in the valley and cold wave will prevail at isolated places during the next few days.
