Justice Sanjiv Khanna Appointment: Justice Sanjeev Khanna will become the next Chief Justice of the country. Notification of his appointment has been issued. The current Chief Justice Chandrachud is retiring on November 10. Justice Khanna will become the Chief Justice from November 11. He will be the 51st Chief Justice of the country. He is to retire on 13 May 2025. In this way his tenure will be about 6 months.
Justice Khanna, who started practicing law in 1983, became a judge of Delhi High Court in 2005. In January 2019, he was appointed judge of the Supreme Court. He is considered a great expert in criminal, civil, tax and constitutional laws.
Nephew of famous judge Justice Hans Raj Khanna
One of his credentials is that he is the nephew of the historically famous judge Justice Hans Raj Khanna. Justice HR Khanna was the only judge of the 5-judge bench during the Emergency who had said that the fundamental right to personal liberty of the citizens cannot be disrupted even during the Emergency. It is believed that for this reason the then Indira Gandhi government did not allow him to become the Chief Justice.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna has given many big decisions during his tenure in the Supreme Court. He appointed the then Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal Lok Sabha elections Granted interim bail for publicity. While granting bail to Manish Sisodia, it was said that the strict provisions of PMLA Act cannot be the basis for keeping someone in jail for a long time without trial. He rejected the demand for 100 percent matching of VVPAT and EVM. He was a member of the bench which declared electoral bonds unconstitutional. He also ruled that if it is impossible for a marriage to continue, the Supreme Court can directly use its special power to order divorce.
