Jagdambika Pal, chairperson of the joint committee of Parliament that is considering the Waqf Amendment Bill, said on Thursday (November 21, 2024) that the report is ready and efforts will be made to reach a consensus on it among all the members. However, opposition members on the committee demanded extension of the committee’s tenure, saying they needed more time to study the changes in the draft law.
The committee met for about six hours on Thursday. At the committee meeting, chairperson and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Jagdambika Pal said that this would be the last meeting of the committee and a draft report would be distributed to the members soon. After this the opposition members protested and raised slogans. Some of them called Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and sought his intervention in the matter.
Lok Sabha has asked the committee to submit its report on the last day of the first week of the winter session of Parliament starting from Monday. After the meeting, Jagdambika Pal said, ‘Our report is ready…our effort will be to ensure that everyone agrees and no one gives any dissent note.’
He said that the committee held a detailed meeting with all the concerned parties and discussed. Jagdambika Pal said that discussions were held with representatives of the Minority Affairs Ministry for more than 29 hours in five days. He said that 25 meetings were held with different organizations regarding the amendment bill.
When asked whether the opposition members were talking about meeting the Lok Sabha Speaker to extend the tenure of the committee, Jagdambika Pal said that they have the right to do so. Jagdambika Pal said that the decision of the Lok Sabha Speaker regarding extension of tenure will be valid.
