Mid-fielder Salima Tete has been named captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, replacing goalkeeper Savita Punia, ahead of the Belgium and England leg of the FIH Pro League starting later this month. In the change, Navneet Kaur has been made the vice-captain for the tour as she will replace Vandana Kataria. Hockey India has announced a 24-member team for the tour of Belgium and England and Salima has decided on her responsibility.
What did Salima say after becoming captain?
Salima, who hails from Simdega district of Jharkhand, knows it is a big responsibility but she is confident about the team’s prospects as the team has a good mix of young and experienced players. Salima said in the Hockey India press release that I am happy that I have been appointed to lead the team. This is a big responsibility and I am looking forward to this new role. We have a strong team and a mix of experienced and young players.
Salima further said that in the upcoming Belgium and England stages of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023-2024, we want to move ahead with strength. We have worked on areas where we need to improve. After being declared the vice-captain of Team India, Navneet also expressed happiness and said that he is looking forward to the challenge coming in the form of Europe phase of FIH Pro League. He said that it feels surreal to be named as the vice-captain. I am very excited to join this team in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023-24, where we will play against good teams. We have a good squad and we are confident that we will do well in the Europe stage of the Pro League. I also want to work on my game and improve.

- Midfielders: Salima Tete (captain), Vaishnavi Vittal Phalke, Navneet Kaur (vice-captain), Neha, Jyoti, Baljeet Kaur, Manisha Chauhan, Lalremsiami.
- Forward: Mumtaz Khan, Sangeeta Kumari, Deepika, Sharmila Devi, Preeti Dubey, Vandana Kataria, Sunelita Toppo, Deepika Soreng.
