The Israeli army has said that it has withdrawn its troops from Gaza’s southern city of Khan Yunis. The troops were withdrawn after Israel said it had completed its first phase of ground offensive against Hamas fighters in Khan Yunis. Meanwhile, Israeli defense officials said troops were being mobilized from Khan Yunus as the army prepared to enter Rafah, Hamas’s last stronghold.

‘The war is not going to stop’

“The war in Gaza continues and we are not going to stop now,” army chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi said. Local broadcaster ‘Channel 13 TV’ reported that Israel is preparing to evacuate Rafah and this process could take several months. Military officials said a significant number of troops would remain in Gaza to maintain operations, including in Khan Yunis, a Hamas stronghold and the hometown of the group’s leader Yahya Sinwar.

America has protested

Khan Yunus’ Associated Press video on Sunday shows some people have returned. Israel has been talking about launching a ground attack around Rafah for several weeks. 14 lakh population is living there. This has been opposed by Israel’s top ally America. White House national security spokesman John Kirby on Sunday reiterated America’s opposition to the Rafah attack and told ABC News that the United States believes the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops “is really for the comfort of these troops who Have been on the ground for four months.
