India’s most prestigious business house Tata Group is going to bring glory to the country once again. Soon Tata’s name is going to be associated with Apple’s iPhone. Till now the iPhone you use is either manufactured abroad, or assembled in an Indian factory of a foreign company like Foxconn. But now the iPhone will not only be Made in India, but it will be Made by Indian company.
Tata will acquire Wistron
According to a Bloomberg media report, the Tata group is in the final stages of acquiring a factory owned by Wistron, a major Apple supplier. The deal is expected to be completed by August 2023. If this happens, it will be an important milestone for the Make in India mission of the Indian industry and the government. This will be the first time that an Indian company is foraying into the field of iPhone assembly. The Tata group aims to acquire the Wistron factory located in the southern state of Karnataka.
There will be a deal of 600 million dollars
According to media reports, the deal was in the works for the last one year. The deal could be worth over $600 million. The Wistron factory is known for producing the iPhone 14 models and currently employs over 10,000 workers. As per the report, Wistron has committed to ship iPhones worth $1.8 billion to Apple by March 2024. At the same time, Apple has promised to triple the factory workforce by next year.
Why Wistron is selling the business
Earlier media reports had started indicating that Wistron is in the process of selling its business in India. In fact, due to the conditions imposed by Apple, the company’s profits were being cut, due to which Wistron is preparing to exit the field of iPhone manufacturing. As a smaller player compared to global giants such as Foxconn and Pegatron, Wistron struggled to negotiate higher margins with Apple.
The company is facing the problem of employees
As per the report, Wistron has faced challenges due to its small size and management issues. In addition, cultural differences between China and India affected Wistron’s ability to retain workers, resulting in a rapid attrition rate at its factory in Kolar, India.
Tata will increase production of iPhone
Wistron has opted to sell its iPhone assembly facility to the Tata Group. Tata intends to expand the existing iPhone production capacity at the Wistron factory. Apart from this, it is being told in the reports that Tata Group is currently testing the assembly of the upcoming iPhone 15 models in India. Wistron initially entered the Indian market in 2008 with the setting up of an equipment repair unit. In 2017, the company expanded its operations and began manufacturing the iPhone for Apple.
