karachi: Russia has warned Pakistan that it will ban rice imports if it does not pay attention to ‘phytosanitary’ (harvest hygiene process) in future consignments after rice consignments were found infected with insects. The warning comes after Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (FSVPS) issued a notification regarding violations of international and Russian phytosanitary requirements by a consignment of rice imported from Pakistan.
Letter written to Pakistan Embassy
Let us tell you that in the notification issued on April 2, it was said that an organism, “Megaselia scalaris (Lowe)” was present in the rice consignment. The trade representative of Pakistan Embassy in Russia was asked to immediately investigate the matter. Russian officials have written a letter to the Pakistan Embassy asking all Pakistani rice exporters to adhere to ‘phytosanitary’ standards to prevent such violations and ensure the safety of agricultural products used in trade between the two countries.
Warned of possible restrictions
The Trade Branch of the Pakistani Embassy in Moscow sent a letter from the Russian authority to the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) of the Ministry of Food Security and other concerned government offices, warning of a possible ban on rice exports in the future if more complaints are received from the Russian authorities. Has given. Russia had earlier banned rice imports from Pakistan in 2019 due to health safety reasons. Similarly, in December 2006, Russia had stopped the import of rice from Pakistan for not meeting food safety standards.
Need to be careful in packaging
Meanwhile, President of Pakistan Rice Exporters Association, Chela Ram Kewalani said that Pakistani rice exporters need to be very careful in the selection and packaging of all rice for export.
