Indian-American physician Dr. Geetika Srivastava is leading a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiative, launched in collaboration with the White House Cancer Moonshot Program, to significantly expand access to cancer-related clinical trials in India. About 20 percent of the global population are Indians. Despite this, only 1.5 percent of the tests conducted globally regarding cancer are conducted in India. This inequality will be removed through ‘Project Asha’.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Had visited America in June last year. At the same time, he and US President Joe Biden had committed to taking appropriate steps to reduce the burden of increasing cancer cases in India.
The two leaders had announced the ‘US-India Cancer Dialogue’ aimed at preventing cancer, detecting it at an early stage, and taking steps to provide appropriate treatment.
The FDA’s ‘Oncology Center of Excellence’ (OCE) has selected Indian-American physician Dr. Geetika Srivastava for this project.
Dr. Srivastava works in the Oncology Division-3 of the FDA and is an expert in the treatment of cancer. Under ‘Project ASHA’, appropriate steps will be taken to understand the current scenario of cancer-related clinical trials in India, interact with stakeholders and address regulatory challenges and point out the hurdles faced in trials.
