Women of the Bengali community living in Nawada and Gaya believe that on the tenth day of Navratri, they bid farewell to their married women by applying vermilion to Maa Durga.

Like every year in Gaya, this year too on the day of Vijayadashami, women of Bengali society were seen in full traditional attire applying vermilion to each other. Today married women of Bengali society played Holi with vermilion. Before this, women offered adornment items to Maa Durga and circumambulated Maa Durga with betel leaves, sweets, vermillion etc. in their hands. Women played Holi with vermillion with drums. Women applied vermillion on each other’s cheeks.

There is a belief that wearing vermilion brings longevity to the husband. People of Bengali society believe that Mother Durga comes to her maternal home for 5 days in a year. Durga Puja is celebrated to celebrate the arrival of Mother Goddess. After these 5 days of stay, Mother Durga goes to Mount Kailash. In Bengali society, Mother Durga has been given the recognition of her daughter. To bid farewell to their daughter, women are first made to sweeten their mouth with betel leaves. Then the Aarti is performed by kissing the betel leaf. After that the women bid farewell to Maa Durga with moist eyes.

Happy Chakraborty, a woman from the Bengali society, told that on the Dashami day of Navratri, Maa Durga is bid farewell and on this day, Holi of Sindoor has great importance in the Bengali society. On one hand, there is sadness of the departure of Maa Durga, on the other hand, there is happiness that Maa Durga will come early next year.

Even in Nawada, women play Holi with vermillion on a large scale today. This tradition is carried out through Railway Colony Durga Puja Committee, the only place in Nawada, where puja is organized with Bengali customs. First women perform Aarti of Maa Durga and then play Holi with vermilion. Women of Bengali society have been following this tradition for 72 years in Railway Colony. The women of Bengali society filled the vermillion dedicated to the mother with their own hands and applied it on each other’s cheeks. Before immersion, the entire atmosphere became vermilion during vermilion playing in the pandals.

Bengali women bid farewell to Maa Durga as married women

Chandrika Yadav, president of the Bengali society, said that it is believed that after fulfilling the demands of Maa Durga, they are sent away from their parents’ home to their in-laws’ home. He said that worship is performed with Bengali customs only in the Railway Colony in the city. People come from far and wide to see this puja. This puja is performed with full rituals through a Bengali Brahmin. During this period, all the women living in the railway colony. Everyone reaches here and takes blessings of the mother. Today is considered very special.
