Parliament Session: Today, Tuesday (December 3, 2024), the ruling party and the opposition came face to face in the Parliament when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sambit Patra was speaking regarding the Banking Amendment Bill. Referring to an incident of 1971, he said that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had called the SBI branch located at Sansad Marg and asked Nagarwala to give Rs 60 lakh. Phone banking used to work then. There was a huge uproar in the Parliament after his statement. On behalf of the opposition, MP KC Venugopal strongly condemned his statement and called it an insult to Indira Gandhi.
Sambit Patra, MP from Puri, Odisha, was presenting his views on the Banking Amendment Bill in Parliament at around 3:00 pm today. Around 3.15, while giving his views on the banking system, he targeted former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He said how the banking system had collapsed during the Congress governments. In 1971, money was withdrawn through mobile banking.
Attacked Congress fiercely
Referring to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he also attacked Congress fiercely. Patra said that due to one of his calls, Rs 60 lakh was given to Mr Nagarwala from SBI within a few minutes. This was a sample of mobile banking system. He also said that the Ready Commission was later constituted in this matter, but in history this incident will always be known as the Phone Banking System.
Strong reaction from Congress
After this statement of Sambit Patra, Congress registered a strong reaction. KC Venugopal condemned his statement in the Parliament and said that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee himself used to call Indira Gandhi as Durga and today Sambit Patra has crossed all limits in the House and said indecent and controversial things about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It is believed that there may be another uproar on this issue in Parliament on Wednesday (December 04, 2024).
