I am speaking friend from Canada…’ and in this way cheated 18.5 lakh rupees


Nagpur: A case of cheating of Rs 18.5 lakh from a person has come to light. In Nagpur, a 52-year-old man was duped of Rs 18.5 lakh by a man by taking the name of his close friend. The police gave this information on Tuesday (23 November). An official of the Yashodhara Nagar police station said the complainant, Maninder Singh Jabbal (52), received a WhatsApp call on November 16 from a person who identified himself as Bagga Singh from Canada.

The caller told him that he was a close friend of Jabbal’s friend who was attending a wedding in Canada at that time. He (Bagga) also said that his mother was admitted to a hospital in Nagpur, and requested Jabbal to make some payment online immediately to clear the expenses of the treatment.

The ‘caller’ also assured that he would soon transfer the money to Jabbal’s bank account. A few minutes later, Jabbal received a call from another person, who claimed to be a bank official, and told him that the money was being sent, but it was taking time due to the bank’s server being down.

Jabbal trusted the ‘caller’ who introduced himself as Bagga Singh and transferred a total of Rs 18.5 lakh to various bank accounts. Later he realized that it was a scam, but by then ‘Bagga Singh’ was out of reach.

The officer said that a case has been registered under sections 419, 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and further investigation is underway.
