Shillong NEHU: Students of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong are still on their indefinite hunger strike for a week. The students’ demands are removal of the college registrar, two deputy registrars, OSD of hostel management and resignation of the vice chancellor (VC) of the university. The students allege that the VC has failed to fulfill his responsibilities, due to which many important issues of the university remain unresolved.
Naga Students Union President Mugaka Aomi said in his statement that “We support the initiative of NEHU students. Students are fighting for their rights and we are with them in this fight. Their demands are completely justified. We want the administration to take immediate action on this issue because the students have been on hunger strike for several days and their condition is becoming critical. They have left their studies and are engaged in this struggle, which is very important for their future. We appeal to the administration to find a solution to this issue soon. We will stand with the students till the end.”
Students from other colleges are also supporting
NEHU students are taking this movement forward by uniting with students from different communities. Apart from this, students of other universities and colleges are also supporting this strike.
Attack on VC Professor PS Shukla’s house
Amidst this movement, the residence of NEHU Vice Chancellor Professor PS Shukla has also been attacked recently. Police said that the attack took place during a protest by students, who demanded that the VC and other officials be removed. Police and administration have started investigating the matter and officials have registered an FIR.
VC missing since November 9
In this matter, Senior Research Scholar Forum President Superior Sinkhali said, “The VC is missing since November 9 and we are demanding his resignation. We are with the students, who are fighting for justice.”
protest march in shillong
Meanwhile, various organizations and students have taken out a march in Shillong, in which students of NEHU and other educational institutions, women and NGOs of the state have participated. The march started from the Science Cluster and went to the Administrative Block, where students have been on hunger strike for the last five days.
What did the BJP MLA say?
Meghalaya minister and BJP MLA Alexander Heck said, “There have been problems in NEHU for the last one or one and a half years. I had received a petition from the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers Association, which I sent to the Union Minister. I would urge the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to intervene to solve the problems that students and teachers are facing at NEHU because this loss is not only affecting the students but the entire university.”
BJP MLAs are seen with the protesters
Continuous protests by students in the North-East also come with big challenges because there is a BJP-supported government in the state and an NDA government at the centre, in which BJP MLAs are also seen with the protesters.
