The fourth letter shows the status of the taxpayer.
In this alpha-numeric number, the first three characters are in capital letters such as AAA or ZZZ, while the fourth character represents the status of the taxpayer such as P for Individual, C for Company, H for Hindu Undivided Family. And if the fourth letter is ‘F’, then it indicates that the taxpayer is a firm. Apart from this, G is used for Government, L for Public Limited, J for Artificial Juridical Person and T for Trust.

After this, the 5th alphabet of the PAN card is the first letter of the taxpayer’s surname. The four numbers written after this can be any number between ‘0001’ to ‘9999’. Then at the end there is a letter of the English alphabet.

You can apply for PAN card both offline and online. To apply online, visit the websites of NSDL and UTIITSL, while for offline, download the form from the website or take the form from the UTIISL agent and fill it and submit it to the NSDL office.
