Gupta Navratri is worshiped secretly, hence it is called Gupta Navratri. It is said that ten Mahavidyas are the source of the powers of the whole universe and they are called Shakti. Not only this, Shiva is also like a dead body without this power. But do you know how the 10 Mahavidyas originated.

How the 10 Mahavidyas originated

According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, the origin of the Mahavidyas is linked to a dispute between Lord Shiva and his wife Sati. According to the legend, once Daksha Prajapati organized a huge yagya. All the deities and sages were invited in this yagya. But Mahadev and Sati were not invited. But Sati started insisting on Mahadev to go to this Yagya of her father. But Mahadev did not want Sati to go there without invitation, so that she would be humiliated. That’s why Mahadev unheard the words of Sati.

Sati got angry on this and she transformed herself into a terrible form (incarnation of Mahakali), seeing which Lord Shiva started running away in fear. Seeing her husband scared, Sati started stopping him. In whatever direction Lord Shiva used to run, in that direction another deity of the mother appeared and stopped him. In this way the mother took ten forms in ten directions. These 10 forms of Maa Sati are called Das Mahavidyas. After this, Lord Shiva allowed Sati to go to the Yagya. But after going to the Yagya, Sati had a dispute with her father Daksha Prajapati. Daksh Prajapati had condemned Shiva. Sati could not tolerate the insult of her husband and she sacrificed her life in the sacrificial fire itself.
