Sharjeel Imam Plea: The High Court will hear today (April 10) the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) alumnus Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the Delhi Denga case. Sharjeel’s petition is listed for hearing before a bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Talwant Singh.
Sharjeel is accused of treason. The trial court had rejected Sharjeel’s bail plea in this case. After which Sharjeel has challenged this order of the trial court in the High Court. Last year, the trial court had framed charges against Imam under sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity), section 505 and section 13 (punishment) of the IPC.

In fact, Sharjeel Imam gave a speech at Jamia Millia Islamia on December 13, 2019 and at Aligarh Muslim University on December 16, 2019. In this speech, Sharjeel threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of the Northeast from India. At the same time, in the case of riots in Delhi in February 2020, a case was registered against Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid and many others under UPA and other sections.
More than 50 people were killed and 650-700 people were injured in the riots that took place during that period in North East Delhi.
