The newspaper revealed that Mohammed Darwish, chairman of the Hamas Shura Council, along with three members of the organization’s Politburo – Khalil al-Hayya, Mohammed Nazzal and Khaled Meshaal – are the frontrunners to succeed Sinwar.

Hamas sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that a consensus is emerging in the organization regarding keeping the name of the next leader secret. The report said that the purpose of this move is to give more opportunities to the new officer to work and to protect him from Israel, which is trying to assassinate most of the leaders of the movement.

Ismail Haniya was murdered in Tehran

After the death of Ismail Haniya, Sinwar was appointed head of Hamas’s political bureau. Haniya was assassinated in Tehran in July this year while attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian. Israeli army killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Wednesday (October 16). According to Israel, Sinwar was the main strategist of last year’s October 7 attack.

Yahya Sinwar killed in Rafah, Gaza

Israel officially announced the death of the Hamas leader on Thursday (October 17). “Sinwar, the mastermind of the October 7 attack and massacre, was killed in gunfire on Wednesday in Rafah, southern Gaza,” the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency said in a statement.

1200 people of Israel were killed
