Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has given the reason behind not using RTM card for Shami.
Ashish Nehra revealed a big secret
India’s experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami will now be seen playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Hyderabad bought Shami in the IPL 2025 auction for Rs 10 crore. This happened when his old franchise Gujarat Titans did not use the right to match card.
Speaking to GeoCinema after the IPL 2025 mega auction, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra said that there was a plan to retain Shami, but this strategy did not work. Nehra said, “Mohammed Shami has done a great job for Gujarat Titans and India. What he has done is very commendable. He was a part of our retention plan, but not every plan is successful in retention.”
He further said, “We had thought of using the RTM card, but considering the price at which it went, we had to change our decision.”
Mohammed Shami’s journey so far in IPL
Gujarat Titans bought Mohammed Shami for Rs 6.25 crore in IPL 2022. Gujarat Titans won the IPL trophy in his debut season, and Shami played a key role in it. Shami performed brilliantly in IPL 2023, taking 28 wickets in 17 matches and getting the Purple Cap. His average was 18.64 and economy was 8.03. Shami suffered an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup 2023, due to which he remained out of IPL 2024.
