Onion price in Delhi: The Central Government has taken a big decision to stop the rapidly rising inflation in the country. The government has decided to organize a buffer stock of onions to check the rise in onion prices this year. With this, it has started making it available in a targeted manner.
Issued buffer stock
In order to increase the supply of onions in the markets, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said in a statement that buffer stock is also being released in Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon wholesale mandis of onion in Maharashtra.
Present price of Rs 21 kg
The ministry said that the states have been offered onions at the rate of Rs 21 per kg at places other than storage. This vegetable has also been supplied to the successful sales centers of Mother Dairy at the rate of Rs 26 per kg including transportation cost. The ministry said, “The fast arrival of buffer stock in the market is witnessing a stabilization in the prices of onions.”
Check onion price in metros
According to ministry data, retail onion prices have been increasing gradually over the past few weeks. The price of onion was Rs 37 per kg in Delhi and Chennai, Rs 39 per kg in Mumbai and Rs 43 per kg in Kolkata.
Rates are 22 percent lower than last year
The ministry further said that the arrivals of late growing Kharif (summer) onions are stable and expected to remain stable from March 2022 till the arrival of Rabi (winter) crop. Till February 17 this year, the all-India average price of onions was 22.36 per cent lower than last year.
Prices are fairly stable
According to the ministry, onion prices remained largely stable during the year 2021-22 due to effective market intervention through Price Stabilization Fund (PSF). Similarly, the all-India average retail price of potatoes was 6.96 per cent lower at Rs 20.58 per kg on February 17 as compared to the previous month.

So far, six states, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal have taken advances and a total of Rs 164.15 crore has been released as central share. These states have the funds and mandate to make necessary interventions to control the prices of essential food items. “Other states have also been requested to constitute PSF for intervention at the state level to control the rise in prices of essential food items,” it said.
Tomato prices fall
In the case of tomato, prices have declined during the last one month, though it has remained slightly above last year’s level. The all-India average price of tomatoes till February 1 was Rs 26.69 per kg, which is lower than the previous month. As arrivals pick up in North India, the prices will fall further in the coming week. The arrivals in South India will also increase in the coming week and will pick up pace by the end of February.
