‘Ghar ki murgi daal par’ in BJP: 3 CM ex-Congressmen, 4 outsiders command states

The influence of defectors is increasing in the BJP, which is in power at the Center and in many states. Its hallmark was also seen in the list of state presidents of BJP announced recently. The party has handed over the command of the organization in 3 out of 4 states to leaders from other parties.

Sunil Jakhar and D Purandeshwari, who came from Congress in Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, have been made president, while Babulal Marandi, who came from Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, has been given the command in Jharkhand. All three states account for more than 50 of the total number of Lok Sabha seats.

Not only the organization, a large number of defectors are occupying the post of minister in the center to the chief minister and minister of the state. The Leader of Opposition from the BJP quota in West Bengal is Shubhendu Adhikari, who was a minister in the ruling Trinamool government before the 2021 elections.

Most of the defectors in the organization and government have joined BJP after 2014. Let us know in detail where and how defectors dominate the BJP, which is called the party of organization…

Talk about those who came from other party and became CM first…

1. Himanta Biswa Sarma- Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was a minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in Assam from 2002-15, joined the BJP in 2015. While leaving the Congress, he had alleged that when he came to meet Rahul Gandhi, instead of listening to him, Rahul was feeding biscuits to the dog.

When Sarma joined BJP in 2015, he was entrusted with the work of the organization. From ticket distribution to campaigning, the responsibility was given on the shoulders of Sarma. Sarma’s hard work paid off and BJP succeeded in forming the government in Assam for the first time. Sarbananda Sonowal became the chief minister in the BJP government.

2. N. Biren Singh – Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is also a former Congressman. Biren Singh was the Minister of Youth and Food Supplies in the Congress’s Okram Ibobi government. In 2016, he left the Congress after displeasure with the top leadership. Singh was demanding that he replace Okram Ibobi as chief minister, which was not accepted by the Congress high command.

Recently the news of his resignation was also revealed, but his supporters tore it before reaching the Raj Bhavan.

3. Manik Saha- Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha is also a former Congressman. Saha, a dentist by profession, taught at the Tripura Medical College before joining active politics. He was the vocal voice of the party during the Left government. Saha has also been the President of Tripura Cricket Association while in Congress.

In 2016, he left Congress and joined BJP. BJP first made him the election in-charge and then Panna Pramukh. In 2020, BJP handed over the command of the state president to Saha. Before the 2023 elections, Saha was made the Chief Minister in place of Biplav Dev. Under Saha’s leadership, the party was successful in forming the government for the second time.

4. Pema Khandu- Chief Minister of Arunachal Pema Khandu is also basically a Congressman. Khandu, who entered politics in 2011, has been in Congress and People’s Party before BJP. Khandu has been a minister in Nabam Tuki government of Congress.

In 2016, Khandu first joined the People’s Party and then later joined the BJP with a group of MLAs. BJP made him the Chief Minister. BJP also got victory in 2019 under the leadership of Khandu.

Now talk of BJP organization…
Defector is the boss in strong stronghold Bihar-Jharkhand- BJP has been in power for a long time in Bihar and Jharkhand of the Hindi heartland. Has been Despite this, the command of the organization is with the defectors. In Jharkhand, BJP has appointed Babulal Marandi as its president.

In 2020, Marandi merged his party with BJP. At that time, BJP made him the leader of the legislative party, but due to technical reasons he could not become the leader of the opposition. Now before the elections, BJP has changed his work and handed over the command of the organization to him.

If we talk about Bihar, here in March this year, BJP appointed Samrat Chaudhary as its president. In a political career of 30 years, Chaudhary has been in RJD, JDU and HAM (Se) before BJP.

In 2021, Bihar BJP’s culture cell spokesperson Pankaj Kapadia wrote an opinion in the English website The Print. Kapadia had urged its high command that giving positions to defectors lowers the morale of workers, so don’t appoint them to big posts.

Punjab and Andhra Pradesh also have outside leaders- BJP has handed over the command of Andhra Pradesh to D Purandeshwari and the command of Punjab to Sunil Jakhar. Both have been veteran Congress leaders. Sunil Jakhar was the head of Punjab Congress before 2021. He was considered close to Captain Amarinder Singh.

Jakhar has got a political legacy. His father Balram Jakhar has also been the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Sunil entered politics in 1990 and became an MLA for the first time in 2002 on a Congress ticket. From 2012-2015, he also held the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.

In 2017, he got the command of Punjab Congress. In 2022, after differences with the high command, he joined the BJP. Recently, the party has made him the president of the Punjab unit. BJP won 2 seats in Punjab in 2019 elections.

Talking about Andhra Pradesh, BJP has given command to D Purandeshwari here. Purandeshwari has been a minister in the Manmohan Singh government. He had tendered his resignation regarding Andhra bifurcation. In 2014, Purandeshwari lost the election on a BJP ticket as well. However, he was inducted into the organization by the party.

Dominance of defectors in the cabinet too
Narayan Rane, Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Rao Inderjit Singh, who came from other party, continue to dominate the Union Cabinet. Similarly, in the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh cabinets, defectors have got big portfolios.

In Maharashtra, the BJP is ruling the state with defectors, while in West Bengal most of the party’s MLAs are imported leaders from other parties.

BJP is the favorite party of defectors, see the data…

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analyzed the data of defection leaders from 2014 to 2021 in association with National Election Watch. According to ADR, 1133 leaders changed parties in these 7 years.

Of these, maximum 399 leaders from Congress and 173 from BSP left the party. According to the ADR, in many states the entire unit of the Congress defected to another party.

According to this report of ADR, BJP is the most favorite party of the defectors. The reason for this is the central government. From 2014 to 2021, 426 leaders who were MP-MLAs have joined BJP. These include 253 MLA level leaders and 173 MP level leaders.
