German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits Ukraine

Kyiv: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Ukraine on Monday on an official visit. Just a few weeks ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had criticized him (Scholz) for having a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Scholz’s visit to Ukraine comes at a time when there is speculation about what stance the new administration of US President-elect Donald Trump will take towards Ukraine. The Republican leader has promised to end this conflict after winning the presidential elections.

Germany will not provide long range missiles

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had said on Friday that offering NATO membership to Ukraine could reduce the horrors of this war. Scholz’s visit comes ahead of Germany’s expected elections in February. As the election campaign begins, Scholz has made clear Germany’s position as Ukraine’s second largest supplier. It has also highlighted its efforts to stop the war from escalating and its refusal to give the long-range cruise missile ‘Taurus’.

‘Germany will remain a supporter of Ukraine’

Olaf Scholz said that, in his meeting with Zelensky, he would announce additional military supplies this month, which will increase to 650 million euros. “Germany will remain Ukraine’s strongest supporter in Europe,” he said. In November, Zelensky criticized Scholz for speaking to Putin, his first with the sitting leader of a major Western power in nearly two years. There was a conversation. (AP)
