Thailand same-sex marriage: The King of Thailand has supported the marriage equality bill passed by the Parliament in June. After which Thailand has officially become the first country in Southeast Asia and the third country in Asia to recognize the marriage of gay couples. The royal support was published in the official royal gazette late on Tuesday night. This means that this bill will come into force in the next 120 days.
There was a long standing demand for the right to gay marriage in Thailand. After a lot of effort in the last two decades, this bill was passed in the Parliament in June this year. The passing of this law is being described as a victory for the activists. Thailand, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, is already known for its LGBTQ culture and tolerance. After Taiwan and Nepal, Thailand has become the third place in Asia where gay couples can get married.
The Netherlands was the first country to recognize gay marriage
Opinion polls published in local media within Thailand show that there is overwhelming public support for same-sex marriage. However, the Buddhist-majority kingdom still upholds traditional and conservative values. LGBTQ people say they still face obstacles and discrimination in everyday life. In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to recognize gay marriage, after which more than 30 countries around the world have legalized marriage for all.
Status of same-sex marriage in India
In India too, there has been a demand for same-sex marriage for a long time. A case was filed in the Supreme Court regarding this. For now, the Supreme Court has washed its hands off the matter by saying that the job of making laws is of the legislature. The court cannot do anything on this issue. Apart from India, the top court of Hong Kong was also a little away from giving full rights of marriage. Similarly, the demand for the right to gay marriage is still going on in many countries of the world.
