Srinagar G-20 Summit: India shocked Pakistan and China by choosing Srinagar as the venue for the working committee meeting as part of the G-20 summit. The central government has calculated that the program will be able to convey the message that the situation has returned to normal after the abrogation of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
If media reports are to be believed, the venue of the program was decided in Srinagar despite strong opposition from neighboring countries Pakistan and China. A meeting of the working committee for tourism is to be held in Srinagar from May 22 to 24. Pakistan consulted with countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey and China to change the venue to Srinagar but failed.
China is opposing the meeting
Earlier, China had also presented its stand against the G20 venues in Arunachal Pradesh. India said that in the revised calendar of G20 meetings, the Working Committee on Tourism will be held in Srinagar. There are indications that China may boycott the meeting to be held in Srinagar. India’s position is that Arunachal and Jammu and Kashmir are integral parts and G-20 meetings will be held in 20 states and 8 union territories of the country.

China last year expressed its disapproval for the proposed meeting as it asked “relevant parties” not to complicate the situation by taking any unilateral steps.
Chinese minister can come to India
A G20 meeting will also take place in Srinagar amid several proposed high-level talks with Beijing in the next few months. Both the Chinese Defense and Foreign Ministers are expected to visit India soon for the SCO meetings. India is currently in touch with China, Russia and other member states to finalize the dates for the SCO summit in July. If Chinese President Xi Jinping turns up for the meeting, it will be the first PM since the ongoing military standoff in eastern Ladakh in April 2020.
