Varuthini Ekadashi 2023: The fast of Varuthini Ekadashi will be observed on 16 April 2023. On this day there is a ritual of worshiping the boar form of Lord Vishnu. According to mythological belief, King Mandhata attained heaven due to the effect of Varuthini Ekadashi. Worshiping Lord Vishnu in the form of a boar on Varuthini Ekadashi gives the same virtue as donating food and donating daughters. According to Puranas, fasting on Ekadashi increases good fortune and the basis of good fortune is self-control. If there is no restraint in fasting, then his penance, sacrifice, devotional worship etc. all go in vain. Similarly, on the day of Varuthini Ekadashi, worship is considered incomplete without listening to the Vrat Katha.

Shri Krishna narrated a story to Yudhishthira explaining the importance of Varuthini Ekadashi. According to legend, in ancient times, King Mandhata used to rule on the banks of river Narmada. The king was very charitable and pious. Once the king was doing penance near the forest. Then a bear came there and started chewing his leg. Chewing the feet of the king absorbed in penance, the bear dragged him to the forest. The injured king prayed to Lord Vishnu to save his life.
Freedom from physical pain and salvation achieved by fasting on Ekadashi
Panicked King Mandhata called out to Lord Vishnu with compassion and on hearing his call, Lord Sri Hari Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his discus. King Mandhata was crippled by the attack of the bear, he was very sad and forced to suffer due to physical pain. To get rid of this pain, he asked Lord Vishnu for a solution. Shri Hari said, this is the sin of your previous birth, which you have to suffer in this birth. Lord Vishnu asked the king to fast and worship on Varuthini Ekadashi of Vaishakh.
King Mandhata worshiped the Varaha form of Sri Hari on Varuthini Ekadashi as told by Vishnu ji, by whose glory he became free from physical pain and his body became healthy again. King Mandhata attained salvation by fasting and worshiping Ekadashi with a true heart.
