What was the ‘Sandpaper Scandal’?
The incident of Sandpapergate scandal took place in the year 2018 in the Australia vs South Africa match. That was one of the most controversial incidents in cricket history. The third match of that series was being played in Cape Town. At that time, an Australian player Cameron Bancroft was seen tampering one side of the ball with sandpaper. He was doing this so that the bowlers could get reverse swing. When he was seen doing all this on camera, Bancroft was seen avoiding the mistake by moving his trousers.
This incident caused a huge controversy when Australia’s then captain Steve Smith revealed that the team’s leadership group had planned to tamper with the ball. Smith admitted that he knew about ball tampering, yet he did not stop Bancroft. For this reason, Smith was suspended from domestic and international cricket for 12 months and was removed from the captaincy with immediate effect.
