California-based gastroenterologist Dr Palani Appan Manickam shared through his Instagram post why a person should not drink milk before going to bed. The doctor said that many times the production of lactase enzyme stops in the body of people above 30 years of age, due to which the digestion of milk stops and it is harmful for the body. In the small intestine of our body, there is an enzyme called lactase enzyme which breaks down the lactose present in milk into smaller molecules like glucose and galactose, so that they can be absorbed easily. He told that lactase enzyme is produced more in the body of infants, due to which milk is easily digested. However, after the age of 5, the production of lactase in the body starts decreasing and by the age of 30, the production of lactase becomes zero. People in whom this enzyme stops being produced can drink milk with lactase tablets.

This problem is caused by drinking just before sleeping

Milk directly reaches the large intestine without the lactase enzyme. The bacteria present in the intestine then cause indigestion. Dr said that a person should not drink milk just before sleeping at night as it can cause digestive problems. Even if you do not have digestive problems, you should not drink milk just before sleeping.

The doctor told that milk contains tryptophan which releases serotonin to promote melatonin for good sleep. Timing of drinking milk is important. If you want to drink milk, then drink it 2 to 3 hours before sleeping. Actually, drinking milk at bedtime releases insulin and the carbohydrates present in milk disturb the circadian rhythm. Due to this, the person then has difficulty in sleeping.

Susan Duncan, vice president of the American Dairy Science Association, points out that when a person is in their mid-20s, the body needs nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus and vitamin E. This keeps the bones strong and the body healthy. He said that the nutrients present in milk are essential for bone health, heart health and reducing the risk of cancer. Drinking a glass of milk a few hours before sleeping can be more beneficial to the body while drinking it at bedtime can cause problems related to digestion.
