Supreme Court on Eid Wuzu: An application was made in the Supreme Court to perform wudu on Eid in the Gyanvapi Masjid of Varanasi. Disposing of this, the apex court on Friday (April 21) has asked the district administration to ensure that sufficient number of tubs filled with water for ablutions are made available in the mosque. Actually, last year it was claimed to have found Shivling in this mosque.
According to news agency PTI, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha recorded the statement of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, that the District Magistrate would ensure the availability of water in the mosque premises. The bench said, “The Solicitor General submits that the District Magistrate shall ensure that sufficient number of water tubs are made available for providing the facility of Vaju.”
Hearing on the petition of Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Committee
Earlier, the court had asked the District Magistrate to hold a meeting to make arrangements for Muslim devotees in the Gyanvapi Masjid premises to make arrangements conducive to wudu. The apex court was hearing a plea by the Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Committee, which had requested to allow ablutions in the mosque premises in Varanasi during the month of Ramzan.
The court referred to its order of May 20 last year, in which it had directed that ‘wudu’ and toilet facilities be provided to devotees after sealing certain areas inside the premises. The bench had said in its order that the Solicitor General has assured the court that the District Magistrate will call a meeting, so that a favorable work arrangement can be provided.
The security of the place claimed by Shivling has also been increased.
The bench had also recorded the statement of the mosque management committee that it would be satisfied even if mobile toilets were provided. The top court had on November 11 last year extended till further orders the security of the area where a ‘Shivling’ was claimed to be found.
Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the mosque committee, requested the bench to hear the matter soon, saying that the month of Ramzan is going on and adequate arrangements should be made. He had said that water is being used from a drum for ablutions and the number of worshipers has increased in view of Ramzan.
