Ajit Doval in China: India and China will hold special representative talks on the border issue in Beijing on Wednesday and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval will lead the Indian delegation at the talks. This talk will take place after a gap of about five years. Earlier, the talks of Special Representatives (SR) were held in New Delhi in December 2019.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that both sides will discuss maintaining peace and harmony in the border areas. Will seek “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable” solution to border issues.
“National Security Advisor and India’s Special Representative (SR) on the India-China border issue, Ajit Doval, will hold the 23rd SR meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on December 18,” the ministry said in a statement issued late night. ”
The decision to restore this mechanism of dialogue was taken in the meeting held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Russian city of Kazan on October 23.
India and China had prepared for special representative talks in their diplomatic talks on December 5. India’s special representative for the talks is National Security Advisor Doval, while the Chinese side will be led by Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Due to the eastern Ladakh border dispute, no special representative talks were held in the last five years.
The military standoff between India and China in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and resulted in severe tensions in relations between the two neighboring countries as a result of the Galwan Valley clash in June that year. This deadlock ended after the completion of the process of withdrawal of troops from Depsang and Demchok under an agreement. The agreement for withdrawal of troops was finalized on 21 October.
Two days after the signing of the agreement, Modi and Xi held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan city of Russia. In the meeting, both sides agreed to restore several dialogue mechanisms, including Special Representative talks on the border issue.
