Gujarat Asaram Rape Case: The Gujarat government will appeal in the High Court against the trial court’s acquittal of six accused in the 2013 rape case involving Asaram. The law department of the state government has taken this decision. The government will challenge the acquittal of Asaram’s wife, his daughter and four of his disciples. In this case, Asaram has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The prosecution has also sought the government’s consent to challenge the January 31 order of the Gandhinagar court, which suggested that life sentences for Asaram in the Jodhpur and Ahmedabad cases should run concurrently. A legal opinion was given that the trial court had no jurisdiction to decide the concurrent sentence as the cases of Rajasthan and Gujarat were different.
Gandhinagar court had sentenced
Significantly, on January 31, a court in Gandhinagar had sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment in a rape case lodged in 2013 by his former female disciple. The court had acquitted Asaram’s wife Lakshmiben, daughter Bharati and four of his disciples, who were accused of helping in the crime, for lack of evidence.
serving life sentence in Jodhpur jail
Asaram is currently serving a life sentence in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur jail in another case of raping a minor girl in his ashram in Rajasthan in 2013. Asaram was convicted by a Gandhinagar court for repeatedly raping a Surat-based disciple from 2001 to 2007 at his ashram in Motera near Ahmedabad.
