Delhi Mayor Election News: Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor election can once again become a cause of political dispute between Aam Aadmi Party and Bharatiya Janata Party. This is because the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor was to be held on 26th April. All its preparations were complete. The Election Commission had also given its approval, but Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Saxena did not appoint the necessary presiding officers to conduct the elections. The result was that the mayor election was canceled at the very last moment.
In the letter issued by Delhi Rajnivas regarding the appointment of the presiding officer, it has been said that the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor has been postponed. LG has mentioned in his letter that he did not receive any information from the Chief Minister of Delhi regarding holding mayor elections. The Presiding Officer does not consider it appropriate to use his power as an administrator to make appointments.
What is there in DMC Act?
According to Section 77 (A) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957 (Amended 2022), nomination of the Presiding Officer is mandatory for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections. Since the LG did not appoint the presiding officer, the election had to be postponed.
When will the mayor’s election be held?
After the letter was issued by the Raj Nivas regarding the mayor election, the MCD has said in its statement that it has received approval from the Election Commission to conduct the mayor election, but the presiding officer has not been appointed. In such a situation, it is not possible to conduct elections for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Right now it cannot be told when the next elections will be held. According to the letter issued by Raj Nivas, the presiding officer will be appointed only when the LG receives information about this from CM Arvind Kejriwal.
AAP held LG responsible
After the cancellation of the mayor’s election, Aam Aadmi Party’s Municipal Corporation in-charge Durgesh Pathak has accused the LG of canceling the elections. He has said that despite the permission of the Election Commission, the election of LG Mayor was postponed. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi says that he works on the suggestion of the CM and the Chief Minister is not present right now. Durgesh Pathak’s answer to this is, what kind of joke is this?
Dalit’s chance to become mayor snatched away
He has asked which suggestion has the LG taken from the CM? Last time too, he went against the rules and appointed presiding officers. The AAP leader says that a person from Dalit community gets a chance to become mayor once in five years, but that opportunity was also snatched away by BJP’s LG.
