Atmanirbhar Bharat: Taking a step towards self-reliant India, the Ministry of Defense has approved a new list of 928 spare parts, which can be purchased only from the companies of the country. The ministry said on Sunday (May 14) that the move is aimed at promoting self-reliance in defense production.
The Ministry said in a statement that the Ministry of Defense has approved the fourth PIL to promote ‘self-reliance’ in the defense sector and reduce imports of Defense Public Sector Undertakings. This is the fourth ‘Positive Indigenization’ list (PIL), which includes ‘replacement units’, sub-systems and parts used in various military platforms, equipment and weapons. At present, about 715 crore rupees are spent on the import of these products.
Ministry of Defense fixed the deadline
The Ministry of Defense has set clear deadlines for the import ban of items, which are from December 2023 to December 2028. Earlier, the ministry had issued three similar PILs in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022. The statement said that there are more than 2500 items included in these lists which are already indigenous and 1238 (351+107+780) items will be indigenized within the stipulated time frame.
It has been said in it that out of 1238 items, 310 have been indigenized. In addition, it will enhance the design capabilities of the domestic defense industry by involving academic and research institutions, the statement said.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that the Narendra Modi government is committed to indigenization and ensuring self-reliance in the defense sector. He said keeping this in mind, the fourth PIL of 928 ‘Line Replacement Units’ (LRUs)/sub-systems and spares has been approved yesterday. The list includes advanced materials and components, whose import substitution value is Rs 715 crore.
The Ministry said that the Defense Public Sector Undertakings will soon start the procurement process for these notified items. The government has taken several measures in the last few years to promote domestic defense production. India is one of the largest importers of arms globally.
