Cyclone warning in Bay of Bengal! Heavy rain expected in Tamil Nadu, Andhra; IMD alert

Weather Update: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a new cyclone alert for the Bay of Bengal. It has been told that around November 23, a low pressure area may form over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal. Due to a cyclone near the Sumatra coast and adjacent South Andaman Sea, there is a possibility of heavy rain in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the coming days.

IMD says that this cyclone will move towards west-northwest and will affect many parts of the central Bay of South Bengal within the next two days. According to IMD, a cyclonic structure has been observed over low lying areas of Comorin region and its surrounding areas.

IMD’s rain forecast

The Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rain at some places in Lakshadweep on November 21 and in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal on November 21 to 25 and thunderstorms and lightning at some places. Similar situation is expected in Kerala and Mahe on 25th November. There will be light to moderate rain at many places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands throughout the week. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya and northeastern states Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on November 21 and 22.

It may rain in these states

Very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over South Tamil Nadu on 21 and 26 November and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on 26 and 27 November. There is a possibility of heavy rain in Nicobar between 21 and 24 November and in Kerala and Mahe on 21, 26 and 27 November. At the same time, heavy rain may occur at isolated places in other areas, such as South Tamil Nadu on 25 and 27 November and Rayalaseema on 26 and 27 November.

Heavy rain in Tamil Nadu

Heavy rains continued in parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday (November 21, 2024), causing severe floods and waterlogging in residential areas. There is heavy waterlogging in urban areas like Rajagopal Nagar, Pushpa Nagar, Raju Nagar, Postal Telegram Colony and other parts of the city in Thoothukudi. Houses in the areas were seen submerged in rain water.

Chances of heavy rain in the coming days

Since the onset of the Northeast Monsoon in October, it has brought widespread rainfall over the northern and delta regions of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram. Delta districts, such as Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai, have been heavily affected, with roads submerged and daily life disrupted. The Meteorological Department has predicted that rain with thunder and lightning will continue in many areas in the coming days.
