Cheetahs in India: A few months back in India, after a long wait of many years, 8 foreign cheetahs were brought to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Now the central government is planning to bring 12-14 cheetahs to India in the next five years. Union Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Kumar Choubey told in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that the government is trying to resettle cheetahs in the forests of India. He said that under these efforts, twelve to fourteen cheetahs will be brought from Africa to India in the next five years. For this, the central government has entered into an agreement with the government of Namibia.
Rs 38.7 crore was allocated
Under this scheme, 8 cheetahs (five females, three males) have been brought to India this year. These are part of the first consignment from Namibia. All these cheetahs have been released in the forests of Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Union minister Ashwini Choubey said that Rs 38.7 crore was allocated under Project Tiger to reintroduce cheetahs to India. This project will run from 2021-22 to 2025-26. He said, Rs 29.47 crore is for the management and maintenance of cheetahs.

Preparations have already started for the arrival of cheetahs in Kuno National Park in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh. In the last three months, 12 cheetahs have been quarantined in Namibia. These cheetahs can soon be brought to Kuno Park in Sheopur. 8 new enclosures are being built for new arrivals in Kuno.
